German Trademarks

A German trademark offers a unitary trademark protection throughout the Federal Republic of Germany. German trademarks may be filed with the German Patent and Trademark Office.

Any signs, particularly words, including personal names, figures, letters, numerals, sound marks, three-dimensional configurations, including the shape of goods or their wrapping as well as other packaging, including colours and combinations of colours, provided that such signs are capable of distinguishing the goods or services of one undertaking from those of other undertakings may be protected as trademarks.

Registration is valid for ten years as of the date of filing of the application and can be extended in each case for a further ten years.
